Truckies Must Be Paid For Waiting Time

Truckies spend an awful lot of time just waiting to load/unload. For a truckie, wait time is generally expressed as the time a driver waits beyond what is expected to load/unload the goods or freight. Anything over and above two hours is considered waiting time.

It is patently unfair to expect a truckie to wait and not be compensated for this waiting time. By making truckies to wait beyond expected wait time means a loss of income. Sometimes, truckies can be made to wait for several hours on end. Not paying truckies for this wait time is patently unfair. Especially, since in this current environment, detention times are getting longer. This results in a loss of income, increased fatigue and increasing risk of accidents.

If this issue of unreasonable waiting time for truckies is not resolved, more truckies will quit their jobs. No worker likes to feel underpaid and not being appreciated. Truckies will then look for other jobs that offer better pay and working conditions.

The trucking industry is already facing a shortage of drivers. Hence, all efforts must be made to retain the existing truckies. Strenuous efforts must be made to recruit new entrants to become truckies.

The average median income for a truckie is $31.50 per hour, and it also depends on the type of truck you drive.
